But beyond the adventure, this unique spot, surrounded by a sea of sand, hides a much deeper story—a legend that gives it a magical soul.

The Legend of the Mermaid of Huacachina
Ancient tales say that a beautiful Inca princess named Huacca China (“the one who makes cry”) fell in love with a young warrior who went to war and never returned. Heartbroken, the princess wept day and night in the desert, and her tears created the lagoon.
One day, while bathing, she saw through her hand mirror that a hunter was watching her. Terrified, she ran, dropping the mirror, which shattered into a thousand pieces and turned into the dunes that now surround the oasis. To escape, the princess threw herself into the water and transformed into a mermaid. Legend says that on full moon nights, the mermaid still rises to the surface, mourning her lost love.
